A 0.4 FTE role, the Project Officer will provide assistance and support to Aboriginal students enrolled in Catholic schools and parents to improve access training, employment and assistance in the workplace. The purpose of this position is twofold: • Provide support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders students who are disengaged from school and quality learning. This initiative stems from the Aboriginal community and clan groups within the Maitland Newcastle Diocese and families of Aboriginal students within our Catholic Schools. The Aboriginal community envisioned an alternative learning and cultural solution that will address the retention and disengagement of students. • Encourage Aboriginal community participation and involvement in the Trading Training Centre Program with Year 11 and 12 students engaging in attainment of VET competencies. As a part of this Trade Training Centre program, the Project Officer will also provide assistance and support to Aboriginal students and parents to improve access to training, employment and assistance in the workplace. Role Description• The Project Officer will work initially with students from St Paul’s HS Booragul, St Mary’s HS Gateshead, St Francis Xavier HS Hamilton and San Clemente HS Mayfield who have an interest in Aboriginal culture, land management and environmental sustainability.• In collaboration with Careers Advisors in each of the cluster schools, the Project Officer will liaise with Training Services NSW, TAFE and other training organisations and industry to access and oversee training opportunities for Aboriginal students.• In collaboration with Careers Advisors in each of the cluster schools, the Project Officer will promote and support apprenticeship and traineeship pathways for Aboriginal students. • The Project Officer will liaise with Yula-Punaal Trade Training Centre, CSO Aboriginal Education Officer, CSO VET Officer, school principals, Aboriginal Education Teachers and Workers in each school.• The Project Officer will coordinate the successful implementation of training courses in each semester of the school year.• The Project Officer will work with cluster schools to identify students at risk of disengagement with education, and to deliver culturally appropriate programs to promote engagement and attainment of educational outcomes.• The Project Officer will be responsible to the Director of Schools through the Assistant Director for this project.
